Adolescent Education
Threat Management by Assessment & Counseling (TMAC)
SouthLight Pathways provides the Threat Management by
Assessment & Counseling (TMAC) program as an alternative
for students (elementary -12) suspended short-term with
recommendation for long-term under Board Policy 6420.1:
Threat. Principals will provide appropriate enrollment
forms when TMAC is offered.
This is a 5 week program which includes parents and is
offered in a multi family group context over five two
hour segments. It begins with an initial assessment that
should also include parents in order to obtain their unique
perspective on the adolescent's management of conflict.
The program draws from a cognitive behavioral therapy
approach and includes both educational and skill building
components. As in other programs, parent involvement is
used to anchor pivotal concepts presented and insure appropriate
implementation beyond the confines of group.
Alternative Counseling/Education Program (ACE)
SouthLight Pathways provides the Alternative Counseling/Education
(ACE) program, an educational program that offers students
in violation of the Wake County Public School System's
alcohol and drug policy (#6429) the opportunity to avoid
long-term suspension. The program is also available to
any youth from the community.
According to Policy #6429, "an exception shall be made
when a first infraction does not involve the distribution,
sale, possession with intent to sell, or conspiracy to
distribute or sell a substance prohibited by this policy,
an alternative to long-term suspension shall be offered.
This alternative may be offered one time to students during
their school career unless an exception is made by the
superintendent."
This program draws upon the research into the 'risk and
protective factors' connected to adolescent substance
abuse. The 12 hour program begins with an initial assessment
at the Pathways Counseling Center and is followed up by
5 two hour sessions that highlight critical factors in
both understanding the impact of adolescent substance
use, and responding effectively to this societal problem.
Parents are required to attend, as part of the school
mandate, and to insure effective implementation of the
material presented.
