Providing Access to Disability Benefits

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

SOAR is a national program designed to increase access to the disability income benefit programs administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) for eligible adults who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and have a mental or physical diagnosis with debilitating symptoms. Southlight provides SOAR as a FREE service for residents of Wake County.

SOAR Eligibility Criteria:

  • Impairments in functioning due to medical and/or psychiatric conditions
  • Presence of medical and/or psychiatric conditions or symptoms that would fit an SSA listing
  • Current enrollment in substance use or mental health treatment or a history of a condition
  • Inability to work and earn “substantial gainful activity” (SGA) due to medical and/or psychiatric conditions (unemployment due to a layoff or inability to find work, etc., is not applicable for SOAR qualifications)

More Information

  • Care for: Individuals experiencing homelessness (or near homelessness), mental or physical debilitating symptoms
  • Ages: 18 and up
  • Duration: Short-term services, averages 3 months
  • Location: Wake County Community or office visits
