Opioid Treatment Program

Medication-Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is a combination of medication and counseling that helps people overcome their opioid use disorder and achieve long-term recovery. MAT is considered to be the gold standard of treatment for opioid addiction, and it has been shown to be effective to:

  • Reduce cravings
  • Eliminate withdrawal symptoms
  • Reduce illicit substance use
  • Reduce risks of relapse, fatal overdose, and transmission of infectious diseases
  • Improve ability to attain goals and fulfill responsibilities and commitments

Several medications are used that work in different ways. Methadone and Buprenorphine are opioid agonists, which means that they bind to opioid receptors in the brain. This can help to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Naltrexone is an opioid antagonist, which means that it blocks the effects of opioids. It can help to reduce cravings and prevent relapse by reducing the effects of illicit opioids.
